Property Description

The House for a Painter can be found on Haydon Way, a quiet cul-de-sac location off St Johns Hill in Battersea. The remarkable property was created from a former Victorian laundry by Dingle Price, of Pricegore architects, in collaboration with his client and current owner, a contemporary artist and painter.

The house is currently set up to include a painting studio, which sits harmoniously beside the living spaces. Entry is to the light-filled double-height studio room, beyond which is the living accommodation. On the ground floor is an open-plan kitchen / dining / living room that opens to a small courtyard garden to the rear, as well as a shower room and two large closets. In the lofty rooms upstairs is a large landing, bathroom, walk in closet and and two bedrooms each featuring stable door-style windows, peeking out over the studio space below.

The studio space could easily be converted to further accommodation. The current owner has drawn up various proposals from adding an office mezzanine to a third bedroom. In total there is the scope to add another 500 sq ft of internal space. These proposals can be seen in the CGI images above.

The late 19th century building (formerly a laundry) was originally converted in 1994 and now is home to a community of artists and makers. Prior to the current owner’s occupation it was the photography studio of a celebrated portrait photographer who frequently worked in the space with the Rolling Stones among others.

Dingle Price is a young London-based architect who has gained considerable attention for his intelligent and exciting approach to design, and now runs Pricegore with Alex Gore. Completed in 2012, this was one of his earliest works. To read Price’s description of the project, see the History section.

Haydon Way is a private road, and there are four car parking permits that are attached the property. St Johns Hill is well known for its excellent cafes and restaurants such the Powder Keg Diplomacy and The Schoolhouse. Battersea Old Town and Northcote Road are both busy shopping areas, offering a broad range of outstanding independent shops and dining opportunities as well as the expected supermarkets and chain stores.

Clapham Junction station is a short walk away, which gets you into Victoria or Waterloo in under ten minutes and also provides connections to the south of England. There is also the Overground which leads to Peckham and South East London in one direction and Kensington and West London in the other.
