Property Description

Knock House is a wonderful detached Grade II listed Kentish farmhouse, mainly of brick construction, partly tile hung and a small part weatherboard, under a tiled roof; numerous alterations and improvements have been made throughout the centuries, Knock House now presents a rare gem, which, though steeped in history, offers a comfortable family home. The interior abounds in oak beams, some massive and some carved, period features including two interesting Inglenook fireplaces, studded oak doors and brick floors. The rooms enjoy excellent head height. Offered chain free.

Quietly nestling on a southerly hillside overlooking beautiful countryside, with hardly a glimpse of any other property, even at a distance, Knock House enjoys uninterrupted panoramic views - a position of exceptional rarity. The ancient Cinque port town of Rye lies 4.5 miles to the west, Tenterden 6 miles to the north and Ashford 14 miles to the North East.

Location & History: A truly historic house, Knock House has origins dating back to the Saxon times, the Saxon word for a sandbank or a hillock is Cnacc and Knock (or Knokke) House like many other buildings in Kent sits on a small hill, originally known as Cnocc, Knocc or Knokke.

There are deeds stating that Knocke "a dunna in Oxeney"-a farm in Oxney--owned by Randulph De Hecthind was, on the 19th September, 1194, given to the Abbot of Robertsbridge. Three years later the Abbot sold Knokke to the De Meyhamm family. In the dark ages, after the Romans abandoned Britain, the whole area seems to have fallen into decay and all that remained were the foundations of the villas and the sacrificial altar of the Roman Temple nearby, now removed to Stone church. The stones of the ruined villas were later built into the foundations of Knock.

Soon after Domesday, Knokke again became the centre of a busy area. In 1254, it is mentioned in the Assize Rolls as a Borge or Borough in Oxney Hundred. From 1500 onwards there seems to have been only the old farmhouse, a barn and a wool store left standing. 16th and 17th century maps and accounts of the district indicate that the farm became a centre of the rich sheep rearing trade.

There is a faded deed with a long Latin title listing Knokke as belonging to the Black Prince.

During the Napoleonic wars, when there was a threat of invasion, the Military Canal was dug and every house along its course from Winchelsea to Hythe seems to have been a barracks; Wellington was supposed to have had his headquarters at Knock. And on sunny days, so the story goes, he sat on the great stone with his spyglass watching the men at work. And sure enough, there is part of the stone worn smooth as the wooden seat of a chair. But whether Wellington sat there or not, we know that many years later, John Piper the painter sat and painted the Marsh from this spot. As did Rowland Hilder, the landscape painter, who said he thought Knock was 'the most beautiful old Kentish farmhouse' he'd ever seen. 'Blakes Reach', the historical novel by Catherine Gaskin, describes the house so meticulously clearly that you cannot mistake the position as being Knock.
