“We feel well looked after here. There are two excellent receptionists in the main building who work from 9-4pm and there are duty staff on call 24 hours a day. There is a cord you can pull or box to press and they come to help straight away – very useful when I broke my arm! They certainly are keen to accommodate any requests and do so quite happily. On site there is the original building which was a hospital for people with respiratory problems, built by Wills Tobacco, ironically. Now that houses people who need a little bit of help and they usually eat in the restaurant. Then there are some houses built before 2000 and our house is in a group of eight, with ours being the only detached one. There is also a block of flats and a dementia wing. The doctor visits twice a week and the district nurse comes on an ad hoc basis.”
“Apart from the 24 hour call service our communal facilities include communal gardens and a croquet lawn as well as the laundry, one hour’s cleaning, lawns mowed, outside lighting, the restaurant and bistro on site, and a small shop selling essential items. The residents organise a music society, a film club, supper club, scrabble and bridge. There is a thriving art group which holds exhibitions, a ‘Talks’ group has visiting speakers and there are occasional afternoon concerts. There is a bar a couple of nights a week, so it is very sociable and there is always something going on.”
“There is a shop in the village in Winsley and an excellent farm shop. The public bus goes into Bath from here and there is a mini-bus to Morrisons in Bath once a week and to Sainsbury’s in Bradford-on-Avon once a week, and other jaunts further afield are on offer.”
