Property Description

About higher green owlers This fabulous residence is one of the area's most fascinating properties. Steeped in history and occupying a fantastic rural moorland location it has panoramic Pennine views. The property offers 3 reception rooms along with a substantial dining kitchen, utility room, downstairs w.C., walk-in pantry and store rooms. There are 4 double bedrooms along with a mezzanine currently used as a fifth double bedroom, house bathroom along with en suite facilities to bedroom 3. The property sits within over half an acre of gardens and grounds. These include ample parking and turning area, courtyard with brewing vats leading to the former brewery and vaulted underground cellar. There are extensive mature gardens and terraces with very well stocked fruit and vegetable beds, and access into an orchard complete with hen house.

History With a datestone of 1610, Higher Green Owlers is believed to be one of Marsden's oldest and most significant buildings. It was built in the 'Jacobean' period as a farmhouse consisting of three weaving cottages with mullioned windows. A barn was added 150 years later. Sitting on the old packhorse route, halfway between Scammonden and Marsden, made it a convenient rest stop for the passing trade. So in the mid-1800s, the enterprising owner opened a brewery. Remarkably, you will still find within the courtyard, the substantial remains of four stone brewing vats thought to be the best remaining examples of such Yorkshire Squares in the County. Alongside there is an impressive barrel-vaulted brewing cellar built into the hillside.

The house, as it stands today has an impressive, almost Manor House frontage behind which you will find ample family sized accommodation with many period features all blending exceptionally well with the more modern interior.

The road bends right and crosses over the railway bridge. Turn left onto Reddisher Road. Follow the road for a mile (Reddisher Road becomes Waters Road). Continue straight ahead onto Blake Lea Lane where the road starts to climb. After 3 bends the road levels out. Circular steps lead down to a lawned front garden with well-established trees and shrubs, and access to the pond and composting area. At the far side of the house there is a gravelled courtyard where you will find the remains of the 4 brewing vats, a lovely 3 trough water feature, and access at the back of the house to the substantial underground vaulted cellar which has a stone flagged floor and was probably used as part of the brewery. The cellar now houses the uv filtration system for the property's own spring water supply. The former brewery buildings are to be found elevated at the side of the courtyard, parts of which are still standing and on which Listed Building Consent was achieved in 2001 to partly restore. There are expansive gardens surrounding the perimeter of the house which are mainly lawned and where you will also find well stocked, tiered vegetable and soft fruit beds, along with an extensively planted mature flower bed, all within a raised area held back by a curved dry stone wall which incorporates two stone seats. There are two patio areas, the upper one is of gravel and stone sets and flags, and the lower, immediately in front of the glazed barn opening, is stone flagged. You will find access into the enclosed orchard which currently houses the hen hut. At the side of the house there is a base for a summer house, lean-to log store, alongside which the propane gas cylinders (for the cooker) are stored.
