Property Description

Enjoying a truly idyllic unspoilt setting in a valley at the end of a no through road and surrounded by beautiful open countryside yet only 8 miles from The Severn Bridge, this is a special property!

It nestles off the country lanes in the rolling hills below Trellech Ridge some 1.5 miles from the village of Devauden.

The house is a hall house which dates from the early Sixteenth Century, with later additions, and includes a feature massive chimney stack. The house has many exposed beams and stone fireplaces but would now benefit from some updating. It has three large reception rooms of considerable character, a farmhouse kitchen, garden room with fine views and five good bedrooms.

The mature gardens, which are surrounded by beautiful unspoilt countryside extend to some two and a half acres and are bordered on two sides by tree lined streams.

Kilgwrrwg is a tiny and scattered rural hamlet in South Monmouthshire between Monmouth and Chepstow some 6 miles from The Severn Bridge (M48). Although the surroundings are rural and unspoilt, the proximity of the M48 motorway network enables easy commuting to Bristol, London, Newport and Cardiff. Chepstow has excellent facilities, including a railway station although fast inter-city trains are better from Newport or Bristol Parkway.

Historical note - nearby is the ancient Parish Church of The Holy Cross. The first mention of a Church on this site was in manuscripts in the early Eighth Century. This tiny yet beautiful Church is surely one of the more remote of all British Parish Churches still in regular use. It is approached via a footpath through the property and by crossing fields and a stream. The vendor is Church Warden, there are monthly services. One rather sad claim to fame is that Richard Morgan is buried here. He was, reputedly, the last British serviceman to die before the 1918 armistice.

The words on the cover of the Church Guide sum up the unique setting of both the Church and nearby house rather well ...
"A site tucked away from the mainstream of life where it has been possible to find peace, quiet and solitude throughout the centuries"
