A Bit About Keston

Keston is a village seeped in history managing to combine some of the most ancient and modern strands of British culture.

Julius Caesar arrived in Keston in 55BC - but didn't stay long! He was followed some 100 years later by another Roman army commanded by Aulns Phantins at the behest of the Emperor Claudius.
The name Keston may have derived from the name of Casterton or Kasterton. In the Doomsday Book the name is given as Cheston.
William Wilberforce (English politician and philanthropist and founder of the rspca) was a frequent visitor to Keston to see his friend William Pitt (the uk's youngest Prime Minister). He would often visit the Oak Tree now called ''The Wilberforce Oak'' and contemplate matters on the stone seat that is still there.
Keston's church is dated from around 1216 and its windmill - currently in poor state of repair - dates from circa 1716.
Keston Common is a 55 hectare area of public open space and is a site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation and an area of Archaeological Significance.
