Property Description

"Launch Event" on Saturday 8th June - Please call to confirm an appointment. Occupying an idyllic position within the private Mount Park Estate, this exceptionally handsome house of some 4,750sq/ft was designed around 1865 by Charles Forster Hayward, a prominent Harrow architect. Described in the Victorian era as a Gentlemen's Residence, times may have changed but the beauty, elegance and grandeur of this historic detached property remain. The 7 bedrooms, 4 living rooms and 3 bathrooms provide impressive accommodation for a large family with an active modern lifestyle.

The rich landscaped setting of "Belmont" within a peaceful cul-de-sac creates a feeling of seclusion and makes for an almost semi-rural character in otherwise urban environs. Upon entering the generous hallway you are impressed by the 11' ceiling height, wealth of period details and craftsmanship evident throughout. All the principal rooms are quite breathtaking with tall sash windows, open fireplaces, ornate cornices and wonderful light. Few homes afford such timeless luxury or are so well preserved, and having been in current family ownership for over 50 years and home to Harrow School Masters prior, you will appreciate this rare chance to become custodian of a very fine property.

The generous plot includes a double garage and very private gardens to the side and rear including the delightful kitchen garden and a large terrace ideal for entertaining. The ground floor provides 3 beautifully-proportioned living rooms, a guest cloakroom and bespoke hand-painted Smallbone kitchen/breakfast room whilst the lower ground floor adds a home cinema/gym, large study/playroom, wine cellar, kitchenette and considerable further potential. The upper two floors provide excellent bedroom space including the original servants quarters and there are delightful views from almost every window in the property.

Clearly well maintained, the house was also re-roofed in 2017 with reference to the original polychromatic style and there is considerable potential within the roof space for further rooms. Also the lower ground floor could easily be used for a home-based business or even a self contained flat, all subject to obtaining the necessary consents.

Harrow on the Hill is a very desirable area which we call London’s forgotten village, combining the convenience of a fast commute to Central London with a wonderful centuries old atmosphere and delightful architecture protected by Conservation Area status. The historic High Street is in part dominated by the impressive buildings of the famous Harrow School from where many London landmarks are clearly visible, all found a short and level walk from the house.

This exceptional position combines a rare degree of privacy with the ability to walk to nearby Orley Farm Preparatory School through the Private Estate. There are many other highly regarded private, state and church schools in the local area, including John Lyon School for senior boys and other accessible choices across Pinner, Northwood and further in to London.

Independent coffee bars, shops, pubs and restaurants mean there is little reason to venture away, but a nearby Waitrose supermarket and Harrow town centre provide for every additional need with covered shopping centres, other major supermarkets and a multi-screen Vue Cinema. There are also parks, golf courses and open spaces to enjoy alongside easy access to the major road network (M40, M25, M1) and all London airports plus a choice of Metropolitan, Chiltern and Piccadilly Line stations within walking distance at Harrow on the Hill, Sudbury Hill and South Harrow. This combination makes the Hill a particularly well connected area of London and a great lifestyle choice.

Notes from the Owner;
"We love the silence and the birdsong, the general tranquility. We loved having teenagers in the house - they could have parties in the basement and we wouldn't even know! Great space for parties, with over 100 for the kids 21sts. Fabulous neighbours, lovely community that we will miss horribly. Also the fireplace with the window above in the sitting room is a favourite of Foster Hayward. He used the same device in Thornlea and Beechbank and also did Druries, The Knoll and Garlands locally. We replaced the boiler in 2012 and additionally have made frequent use of the Bakerloo Line at Wembley Central, the overground at Sudbury Hill as well as Greenford and the Central Line."
