Property Description
A home of unexpected delights When you see a property from the outside, you assume that what awaits you inside will be a standard layout. But when those preconceived ideas are taken away, what you're left with is a fascinating home that excites and entertains as it guides you through its walls. Welcome to 87 Newbridge Road, Ambergate.
The last house on the top of the hill in this much-loved rural area is this where you will find this wonderful property. Built in a plot of land that was once the garden of a neighbouring home, it certainly isn't lacking in space. Looking straight down the Derwent Valley, views are just one of the treats this home is blessed with.
Every morning when I wake up I take a moment to look out the window and take in the view. At the top of the hill is a big tree; we've enjoyed a few picnics up there over the years, it has beautiful 360-degree views, " the owner tells me.
Why did they fall in love with it? I asked the current owners why they chose this property. "The privacy. Directly behind is a small farm who have a few cattle and chickens, and to the right we don't really see our neighbours because there's only one small window on that side of the house. At the entrance are electric gates and fences all the way around, so we're really self-enclosed.
The deck at the back is very private, it's been the venue for many a bbq and party.
The second thing that attracted us to the property was the layout. Our family were growing up and the layout really worked for us, giving everyone their own space as the home is on three levels. The heart of the home is the very large living room-come-open-plan-kitchen on the middle floor, this is where we all come together."
peaceful and historic location Ambergate is a nice rural and peaceful location with its roots in the 19th century. It has grown from what was a tiny hamlet into a substantially sized village. It was home to Europe's first fully operational electronic telephone exchange, which opened in 1966. The property owner tells me that during the Second World War there was an Italian prisoner of war camp just down the road, and quite a few artefacts have been found in the surrounding fields.
From one of the home's windows you can actually see the restored Grade II* listed Heage Windmill, the only working six-sailed stone tower windmill in England.
Even though its location is rural you are within around 200 yards of the nearest pub, The Spanker, perfect for a some great pub food, and it even hosts events. Also close by is The Hurt Arms and the local cricket ground. Belper is only a short distance away, with its river gardens and Cromford Mills, which is part of the unesco World Heritage Site and is owned and managed by the Arkwright Society.
When it comes to amenities, this property is well located. There is a train station at Ambergate that connects you to Derby, from where you can travel to most major destinations. The nearest major town is Belper, although Ripley is only 10 minutes away and hosts several major high street stores. There are also a number of good local schools close by for those with younger children.
The layout What makes this property's layout so unusual? As you enter the elegantly styled entrance hall, you are met with two decent sized bedrooms, a shower room and also the utility room. This area is currently used by the owner's daughter and her son as a mini apartment. Venture up to the first floor and you have the vast open-plan living/dining/kitchen space, as grand as this room is, your eye is constantly drawn to the views that dominate - the house really was built to make the most of the views.
"Also on this floor is a large bedroom and en-suite shower room, which has a private entrance off a small hallway. On the top floor is a good sized bedroom and bathroom with a bath and shower. There is also a smaller bedroom that I currently use as a study. My wife and I have the top part of the home, my daughter the ground floor, and my son the first floor. We've all got our own sections, but come together on the first floor."
I asked the owner what benefits he thought the home offered a family: "open plan living and fantastic relaxing views, " he told me. "It's ideal for a family with older children as everyone gets their own space but then you can all be together as well.
Favourite places The views really sell this property, as you look straight down the Derwent Valley.
My wife likes to cook; she is always trying something new. The great thing about the house is that even when she is in the kitchen she's still part of the family."
This home is beautifully styled and designed. There's the unusually shaped bedroom window that gives you the wonderful view of a tree and countryside, the immaculate décor that stretches through every inch of the property, and the little textural touches that add to its alluring décor.
The kitchen/dining/living space is vast. The kitchen, with its neutral shades, sits unassumingly in one corner of the room, and every window shares a different story of the glorious scenery that surrounds this fantastic home. You can imagine the space filled with family and friends, whether for a special occasion or just for Sunday lunch.
Each of the bedrooms is a great sized double and perfect for a growing family, with many contemporary touches throughout. The house is perfectly presented; you could easily move into this property without having to lift a finger.
Although we are giving you a taste of what awaits you through the photographs and the words on this page, it cannot compare to the feeling of actually standing in the property and taking everything in for yourself. The minute you take a step into the grand entrance, you will be surprised by what you find. We don't want to give too much away, as we want you to be able to explore and discover all the unexpected delights this home has to offer.
Why leave? People's time in a property comes to an end for different reasons; for this family, the property is simply not being used as much as it should. "We spend almost half the year in Spain - we were away for eight weeks this summer. We built the decked area to enjoy the summer months and now we're not here to do so. Our children aren't a million miles away from wanting to leave home, so we're looking to downsize."
This is a property that is perfect for all seasons; you have the private and large outside space to make the most of the summer months, and a spacious interior that still feels cosy when the nights draw in and the cold weather takes hold.
Just one more thing This really is a special home and we encourage you to come and join us for a viewing. Don't let any preconceived ideas cloud your judgment, come and see the reality for yourself.
