Property Description

A five bedroom, three reception room, two bathroom Arts and Crafts house, with many original features, built by restoration architect, Harold Brakspear, for his own occupation, in 1904 in vibrant Corsham, 9 miles from the centre of Georgian Bath. In addition, there are a range of detached outbuildings, formerly stables and carriage shed with planning permission (2018) for conversion into a two bedroom self-contained annexe.
Brakspear was a renowned ecclesiastical architect, specialising in restoration. He worked on many local churches and country houses including St George's Chapel, Windsor, for which the King awarded him the kcvo.
The vendors say: "On a wet Saturday afternoon in early May we discovered and fell in love with this beautiful house which became our much loved family home for twenty five years. Many features were still largely original, without any of the more outlandish 'improvements' popular in the 60s and 70s. These include stunning stained glass double doors opening into the drawing room, a Victorian cloakroom downstairs, original fireplaces, two with Roman Mosaic Hearths salvaged by Sir Harold during his excavations on the site of a Roman Villa at Box. The staircase was imported from a nearby country house, as were the two fitted mahogany display cabinets in the Drawing Room - one of which ingeniously converts into a desk bureau."
The house has been re-wired and replumbed over the years by the vendors including replacing the double glazed windows in character with the style of house.
The house is light, airy and spacious. Downstairs there is a drawing room, dining room, family room, kitchen with oil-fired Aga, leading to a utility room, pantry and wine storage area. Upstairs there are five bedrooms and two bathrooms.
The large garden is laid mainly to lawn with hedges, shrubs and fruit trees. There are two driveway entrance/exits to the house, a double carport in the outbuildings and parking space for numerous vehicles. The property enjoys a very peaceful and private position in Pickwick within walking distance of Corsham's picturesque and historic high street which offers an eclectic range of independent shops, restaurants and public houses. A Supermarket and Doctors' Surgery are also close at hand.
Corsham is an historic market town full of old world charm with a very attractive high street which featured in the first series of Poldark. Corsham Court with its Capability Brown designed gardens is a well-known attraction. The Pound Arts Centre provides Corsham's cultural hub whilst the Springfield Campus offers library, cafe and a wide range of sporting activities with gym and swimming pool. The town has a number of highly regarded schools with higher education offered by Bath College, Wiltshire College and Universities in Bath and Bristol. A range of private schools are within an easy commute.
Equestrian activities are widely catered for in the local area with International Eventing and Horse Trials at Badminton and Gatcombe both close to hand.
More comprehensive facilities can be found at Chippenham 4.2 miles away and the World Heritage City of Bath 9 miles away. Both offer a high speed rail service to London and Bristol and M4 Jcts 17 & 18 for Swindon and Bristol are within easy access. International Airports are at Bristol (28.6 miles away)) and Heathrow, 87.7 miles away.
