A brief story & history behind the bottle factory, old town, swindon (An impressive and sympathetic 2019 conversion):
In 1870, Mr Edwin Robert Ing, a businessman who had owned a chemist at 12 Wood Street since 1855, built the building on Lansdown Road at the end of his home’s garden to house the “North Wilts Aerated Water Manufactory”. He had built his home, Walton House on Bath Road in 1868, which was replaced by another building in the 1980s. The earliest Ing bottles were just marked E.R. Ing, then E.R ing & co with the introduction of his famous crossed Battle Axe logo and finally marked as E.R ing & son.
Edwin Robert Ing later moved to The Mount in Croft Road, Swindon and when he died in 1909 his 'water' fortune was worth over £1.2M in today's money.
The Ing business continued until after World War Two when Ing & Son merged with Leese, another mineral water company in Swindon, forming 'Leese Ing'.
Norman Charles Furguson had purchased the Leese business in the early 1930's and added the Ing business after 1945 The company called Leese Ing & Co was incorporated in 1951 with the Barker, a separate mineral water company added in 1952.
In 1973 Ace Soft Drinks, owned by Arkell, took over. In the early 1980s, Ace Soft Drinks, the building was converted to offices and recording studios for Wyvern Television and then later used by Videographics, a media company. Today this vibrant story makes The Bottle Factory a historic part of Swindon and an interesting place to live.
