Property Description

This remarkable two-bedroom apartment is positioned on the fifth floor of neo Bankside, a riba award-winning development of four hexagonal glass and steel pavilions, close to the banks of the River Thames. Design was lead by Graham Stirk of Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners in 2015. The apartments sit next to Tate Modern and have breathtaking views of central London, enclosed winter gardens and beautiful riverside groves, linking the pavilions at street level.

Internal accommodation is arranged around an open-plan kitchen, living and dining room which opens out onto the balcony and winter garden. These spaces are flooded in natural light, care of large sections of glazing and are not directly overlooked by the Tate Modern Blavatnik Building viewing tower.

Graham Stirk is a Senior Partner at rshp. His award-winning designs include the Leadenhall Building, neo Bankside, One Hyde Park, and the British Museum’s World Conservation and Exhibitions Centre which was shortlisted for the Stirling Prize in 2017.

The overall design exhibits an external bracing system of steel ties, overlaying large sections of glazing which have become a trademark of Pritzker Prize-wining architect and rshp founding partner, Sir Richard Rogers. This vernacular can be seen in some of Rogers’ most famous buildings including the Pompidou Centre in Paris. The steel ties and nodes also allude to the former industrial heritage of the Bankside neighbourhood; the oxide reds of the Winter Gardens echo those of neighbouring Tate Modern and Blackfriars Bridge, while the exterior’s timber clad panels and window louvres offer an intimacy and warmth across the pavilions. The pavilions have been described by Rogers as “a string of pearls”, that link the cultural institutions of the Southbank.

The apartment is positioned on the fifth floor and has arguably one of the most impressive views of the London skyline from its balcony. Sir Christopher Wren’s, St Paul’s Cathedral is positioned opposite the pavilion on the other side of the river, while the Barbican looms in the distance and the London Eye and Big Ben can be see to the west. Rogers calls this, “a sequence of the most glorious city views anywhere in the world.”

The Winter garden is an enclosed, single-glazed balcony, suspended from the main structure on a lightweight deck with large sliding screens. It acts both as an enclosed terrace and an addition to the interior living space. The garden effectively creates a ‘prow’ and is expressed as exposed steel decks suspended from the main floor plates on a system of props and hangers. These communal spaces have engineered oak floorboards throughout.

Entry to the apartment is accessed via beautiful private gardens at Bankside level. A fully glazed lift provides all occupants with fantastic views of London and the river. A wide hallway leads through the communal areas, past a master bedroom with en-suite bathroom with anti-humidity tiles. There is a second bedroom and family bathroom. All appliances and fittings are up to date as of 2015.

The gardens at ground level were designed by Landscaped designers Gillespies. There are a series of interlocking groves with planting inspired by native woodlands, balancing beautifully with the contemporary lines of the buildings. Unusually in the heart of a city, the outdoor spaces offer neo Bankside’s residents opportunities to engage with nature, and create a new micro-ecological environment in this established urban setting. The elegant and peaceful landscaped gardens integrate neo Bankside with the neighbouring Tate Modern and its surroundings, and provide public access during the day as well as a secure, private environment for residents to enjoy.

The pavilions have 24-hour concierge service, a private gym with swimming pool and underground parking spaces available to buy or rent.

Bankside is home to a number of London’s must illustrious cultural institutions including Tate Modern, the Southbank Centre and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Borough Market is within walking distance and houses some of London’s finest traders of fruit, vegetables and fresh produce; Monmouth Coffee and Brindisa are particular favourites.

London Bridge station is around five minutes’ walk for Northern and Jubilee underground lines and National Rail services. The city is within ten minutes’ walk.
