Access is readily available to Central London, the M25 and the south coast via the A24 trunk road. Ewell is reasonably convenient for both Gatwick and Heathrow airports (both accessed via the M25). The name Ewell comes from the Old English word meaning river or spring. This is due to the sacred spring at Ewell which has drawn people to the area since Prehistoric times.
It borders a south-west boundary of Greater London at Cheam and is within the capital's commuter belt and contiguous suburbs of the Greater London Built-up Area, 12 miles (19 km) from its centre. Ewell has the main spring, with an adjoining pond, at the head of the Hogsmill river, a small tributary of the River Thames.
