Influenced by the beginning of the Arts & Crafts Movement, was designed as a tall manor house in 1897 by James Ledingham for Mr Prince-Smith a local businessman and extended in 1912 for the Prince-Smith family, which include an off centre four storey tower topped with irregular battlements, square corner turrets and a very tall canted bay for the newly created great hall transforming it externally into a baronial style residence. Fittings of the highest standard were used throughout Whinburn both externally and internally, so creating an Arts & Crafts house of supreme quality.
Whinburn with its adjoining Coach House is noted as an important country property with a gateway and lodge house, listed Grade II buildings for historic or architectural interest. Stands in large gardens and follies extending to approximately 7 acres, and listed in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens.
