Description

A truly unique and fascinating Grade I listed period house forming a substantial part of this imposing country mansion set in a private estate of some six and a half acres in an idyllic rural setting about a mile from Backwell and two miles from Nailsea.

The extremely spacious accommodation is delightful and is certainly enhanced by many unique features from the Jacobean and Medieval period. The space works wonderfully over three storeys as a family home with modern adaptations and briefly comprises three reception rooms, a kitchen, utility room, WC, spacious inner hallway, cellar, five bedrooms, the master of which offers an en-suite and dressing room, two further en-suites, a family bathroom and loft/hobby room. This majestic property offers the chance to live within a piece of history with the resplendent period features that this home offers, whilst in tandem with a modern oil-fired central heating system, mains electric with up to date electrics, mains drainage and even a secret staircase!

Gardens & Outbuildings

The house is approached via a tree lined quarter mile drive and the gardens and grounds including the broad gravelled carriage sweep at the front of the house and the croquet lawn are shared with the adjoining properties. Perceval Place offers the advantage of a private, l-shaped garden and orchard including a variety of trees and cider apple trees extending to approx. 0.6 of an acre which is part walled with a stone built full-height summer house with pitched tiled roof offering views over the picturesque surrounding countryside. In addition, the property includes a generous walled courtyard garden accessed from the kitchen which is perfect for entertaining and al-fresco dining; a further gated garden laid to lawn and gravel pathway leads to a pair of stone outbuildings with power and light; a patio area off the family room and a double garage which is part of the original stable block, with double opening wooden doors, power, light and large roof space. Further off-street parking is allocated at the rear of the property.

History

Nailsea Court is believed in part to date from medieval times and has had several notable owners including Richard Perceval who deciphered documents that aided in defeating the Spanish Armada. As a consequence, Nailsea Court was called "The house that saved England" by Bishop Kennion and in 1574 Elizabeth I is believed to have visited the house.

Perceval Place is the central larger wing of the house, which was created when the building was very sympathetically divided some nineteen years ago under the supervision of The National Trust and English Heritage. The very spacious accommodation is enriched with a host of impressive original features and later well-matched additions creating a charming home with many architecturally and historically important elements including fine fireplaces, a superb Jacobean staircase, mullioned and leaded light windows, oak panelling, exposed beams, a medieval stained glass window, carved inscriptions and carved doors with two doors of notable merit being the Nailsea door and the Bristol door with stunning detailed and rare Jacobean carvings. As the central wing of the house Perceval Place also includes many of the principal rooms of the building, The Great Hall, The Solar, The Crusoe Room and the Cole Room. The latter which has an impressive ornate Elizabethan moulded plaster ceiling and a celebratory Limestone fireplace believed to have been inscribed for the mp of Bristol in 1593.
