Property History

Built around 1640, Greaves Cottage is one of the oldest houses in Lancaster. This Grade II listed building is constructed around a cruck frame, with metre-thick sandstone walls. It’s possible the impressive stone fireplace was upcycled from an even older house, perhaps from the Tudor era. Other glimpses of a building that once was are visible in the kitchen window, which was once mullioned, the beautifully crafted chamfered beams, and the wide stone lintel above the back door which suggests the building, described as a ‘Dairy and Outhouse’ in the 1903 deeds, would have been home to a modest milking concern. In the attic, the beams appear to have had their pitch lowered to support slate as now adorns the roof; a steeper pitch would have suited thatch as was the more popular choice in Stuart-period Lancaster. Downstairs there are traces of the old wattle and daub engrained into the massive beam.
The engraving shows Greaves Cottage in 1829, surrounded by gardens and fields, and with a backdrop of Lancaster Castle.
