About Anstey Gardens
Anstey Gardens is less than ten minutes’ walk from Alton railway station, from where half-hourly services operate to London Waterloo, a journey of just over an hour. The station is also the terminus of the Watercress Line, a heritage railway running steam trains between Alton and Alresford. Buses passing Anstey Gardens include local services to the station and high street shops, and central London is approximately an hour’s drive away.
The area offers a diverse mixture of attractions, including a choice of traditional pubs presenting live music, quiz nights and other events. The Palace Cinema in the town centre combines old-world appeal with showings of many of the latest releases, and Holybourne Theatre amateur drama company has an active Youth Theatre group.
Local museums include the celebrated Curtis Museum of local history, housed in a beautiful old building, and the nationally important Jane Austen’s House Museum in Chawton, two miles away. The town also has an excellent library.
Alton is on the edge of the South Downs National Park, a wonderful place to experience ancient woodlands and diverse natural habitats, and gaze at the stars from the International Dark Sky Reserve. The long-distance Hangers Way footpath, extending from Alton Station through 21 miles of picturesque countryside to the Queen Elizabeth Country Park, passes through Selbourne, where there is a museum dedicated to Gilbert White and his ground-breaking study of the natural history of the area.
Alton Football and Cricket Clubs are located close together a few yards from Anstey Gardens, while on the southern edge of the town, Alton’s excellent Sports Centre has swimming and diving pools and a well-equipped gym. The Centre shares its site with the High Sports indoor climbing venue, trampolining, tennis and cricket clubs and the Jubilee Playing Fields.
A comprehensive choice of shops and services is within fifteen minutes’ walk, mostly located along the traditional High Street. The mix includes national chains, local traders and supermarkets. There is also a comprehensive recycling facility around half a mile away in Omega Park Industrial Estate.
Anstey Gardens is in the catchment area for Alton Infant and Anstey Junior Schools and Amery Hill School, a secondary with Academy status, all of which are within fifteen minutes’ walk. The Wilson Medical Practice, based in Alton Health Centre, is a large, long established family practice with eight GPs, and there is a choice of dental surgeries in the town.
