The road is named after Anthony Ashley Cooper, the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury. Serving as mp for Bath between 1847 and 1851, Lord Shaftesbury is more popularly commemorated by the Shaftesbury Memorial in Piccadilly Circus, London (known colloquially if incorrectly as Eros).
