Property Description
The elegant yet imposing properties of Albion Street (1822) depict the work of architect and builder James Berry, who took over the work of Amon Henry Wilds, the son of successful builder Amon Wilds.
The style of these Regency properties follows closely on from the Neoclassical Regency style of architecture, adding an elegance and lightness of touch but maintaining much of the Regency success that such properties are typically built, as terraces or crescents, featuring the white painted stucco facade, tall windows and high ceilings.
It is the only property in the terrace that had the ability to extend to the side which was done in two phases in Victorian times. The lower ground floor (with its own entrance) is currently arranged as a one bedroom apartment. The property was, for many years, owned by the U.K. Government and used as the county records office. The Strong Rooms are now offices with the upper floor still retaining the original Strong Room cast iron door - a great dinner party talking point.
The property benefits from a pretty courtyard style rear garden, with covered outdoor dining area, accessed via the kitchen and there is also a sunny roof terrace on the second floor.
What the Owner says:
When we moved in, we completely renovated the house from top to bottom – new plumbing, heating system, electrics, fire alarm, plastering and decorating with specialist materials and paints. We installed new shower rooms and bedroom fittings as we planned to continue its 40yr history as a quality B&B. This we did very successfully, gaining 5* ratings on TripAdvisor from year one. Two years ago we renewed the top floor accommodation as well, so it also has a new roof. All this, of course, was done to comply with the requirements of the Conservation department, as the house is Grade II Listed. The location is brilliant. We are only steps away from everything Lewes has to offer. It's also surprisingly quiet.
